The Alliance for the Social Market Economy is honored to award the Alfred Müller-Armack Medal of Merit to Professor Dr. Rolf H. Hasse as an appreciation for his effort to promote the Social Market Economy and to continuously convey its basic principles as well as an appreciation for his long-time dedication as a member of the board of the ASM.

Awardee Professor Dr. Rolf H. Hasse

studied economics at the Universities of Münster and Cologne. He was a research assistant at the institute for economic policy under the leadership of Alfred Müller-Armack at the University of Cologne and later at the economic seminar under the leadership of Hans Willgerodt from 1968 to 1981. After his doctorate and habilitation, he was professor of economics, especially of economic policy at the Helmut-Schmidt-University from 1981 to 1998 and at the University of Leipzig from 1998 to 2006. Furthermore, he was the director of the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg from 1992 to 1998 and acting head and director of the Frauenhofer-Zentrum für Mittel- und Osteuropa (MOEZ) in Leipzig from 2006 to 2008. He has been being member of the board of the Alliance for the Social Market Economy since 1992 and is currently also spokesperson of the doctoral study course Social Market Economy of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation.

Awardee Dr. Walter Oswalt †
used to be a member of the first Green faction in the Frankfurt Römer from 1981 to 1985. Afertwards, he worked as a free journalist and studied philosophy at the University of Vienna received a doctoral degree there. He dealt with the history of ideas of liberalism in numerous monographies, editions, essays and reports. Thereby, he introduced the ideas of ordoliberalism in political and social debates and groups. He significantly contributed to the preparation of the Walter-Eucken-Edition, which is going to be published by the publisher Mohr Siebeck in 2020. After a long and serious disease, Walter Oswalt at the age of 58 passed away on June 23, 2018.

Laudator Roland Schaeffer
studied sociology in Heidelberg, Berlin, Paris and Frankfurt. After decades as a member in the administration of finance and environment in cities, states and the federal state, Schaeffer now works as a free journalist.

Laudator Professor Dr. Wolf Schäfer
Teached as a professor of theoretical economics at the Helmut-Schmidt-Universität in Hamburg from 1981 to 2006. Additionally, he was the vice president of the university from 2003 and 2005. He is a member of the directorate of the Institute of European Integration of the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg-Foundation.

Laudator former governor Dieter Althaus
was in his role as education minister member of the government of the state Thuringia from 1992 to 1999. From 1999 to 2003 he was the chairman of the CDU-faction in the state parliament of Thuringia and afterwards governor of the state from 2003 to 2009. Today, Althaus is Vice President Governmental Affairs Magna Europe.

Keynote speaker Professor Dr. Justus Haucap
has been being professor of economics at the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Moreover, he is founding director of the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics (DICE) and was the chairman of the monopoly commission from 2008 to 2012.
